Tagore was born at Calcutta in West Bengal as the son of Maharshi Devendranath Tagore and Sarda Devi. He was the person behind the establishment of school at Shanti Niketan which was later developed as the world famous University of Viswa Bharati. In 1912 TAgore Published 'Jana Gana Mana' in in the book 'Tatvabodhini' and next year he awarded with Nobel Prize for Literature. His famous book 'Gitanjali' was selected for the Nobel prize. 'Amar Sonar Bengla' the National Anthem of Bangladesh was also written by him.
Tagore was awarded Knighthood by the British Monarch George V in 1915, but later he surrendered it as a protest against the Jallianwallabagh Massacre.
